Recently two of my clients asked me about my career and professional experience. Perhaps it was a coincidence, but as the timing is special for me, it made me think more about my journey.
It was exactly 12 years ago, September 1st, 2009, that I decided to set up my own business and embark on a journey that would teach me so much about life, business, people, and myself.
As a trainer and coach supporting people in defining their goals, assisting them in life and career transitions, motivating and guiding them on their way to become the new version of themselves, I have been privileged to meet successful entrepreneurs, talented managers and highly-skilled specialists working or planning to work in an international environment.
What do I love about my job?
Having the opportunity to be the co-author of the space of personal growth, as well as being able to see and explore the power of human mind, motivation and clear goals.
What were the most stressful moments?
The most stressful were the moments of change and uncertainty, one of which was when one of my biggest corporate clients was taken over by another company that had different training policy and priorities. I knew I would lose this client after a few years of successful cooperation. Fortunately, relationships I built back then resulted in new opportunities a few years later, but at the time I had to come up with new ideas and focus on developing new training programmes.
What were the most exciting moments?
Interestingly, the most exciting were the moments of change and uncertainty too. When I managed to overcome the initial confusion and focus on what I could do rather than what was beyond my control, I could tap into the creative power we all have deep inside. This is how I started painting. I would spend a few hours at a time surrounded by dozens of paint tubes, brushes and all the creative mess that resulted in trying out things I would have never considered before.
What would be my advice for people who are considering starting and running their own business?
1. Be aware of your values.
2. Build a good working relationship with your new boss – yourself.
3. Create your own definition of work-life balance.
4. Avoid self-sabotage.
5. Make friends with your intuition.
6. Learn things that may seem useless for some.
7. Be grateful.
… and one more – be patient but also ready to embrace sudden change if necessary.
